Stephen Hawking - Omega Speedmaster Starmus Science Award
Stephen Hawking was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who was also the director research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge. Hawking received his PHD 1962 in applied mathematics and theoretical physics. Prior to graduating, Hawking was diagnosed with an early-onset and slow-progressing ALS that slowly paralyzed him. In spite of this, and even though he eventually had to communicate through a speech generating device, Hawking became one of the most renowned and accomplished theoretical physicists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Hawking’s work includes the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. He also achieved success popularizing theoretical physics to the layman, especially with his book “A Brief History of Time” which appeared on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks.
Omega partnered with theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking to give away this special edition Omega Speedmaster to winners of the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication at the Starmus Festival. Winners in 2017 were handpicked by Mr. Hawking and included astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, musician Jean-Michel Jarre, and the creators and cast of the television comedy The Big Bang Theory.
