The De Bethune DB25GMT Starry Varius

I’m going to come right out and say it - I don’t think I’ve seen a De Bethune that I haven’t absolutely loved, and the new iteration of the Starry Varius is no exception. Boasting an impressive marriage of traditional watch aesthetics and wildly futuristic designs, the DB25GMT is truly a looker -as well as a technical marvel.

THE JUICE:

The watch is really a beautiful integration of technical prowess and insane decoration - Both on the dial side, and the movement side. Looking straight on the dial, you’ll notice a number of “rings”, all pretty self explanatory, but also quite legible considering the amount of complications you’re actually looking at.

First, you start with the hours raised domed hour ring, flanked by a slightly recessed rose gold minute chapter ring. The hazy cream/grey ring features blue indices, so the time is superbly legible, with plenty of contrast for the eye.

Moving in, you have the recessed GMT '“Home Time” ring, traced simply by a rotating titanium sphere with a blue and gold polish. The indices are marked in gold and black to indicate daytime and nighttime hours.

Moving in to the innermost platform, you’ll find one of the more beautifully decorated pieces of the entire watch. Featuring a date ring, then an absolutely stunning flame blued polished titanium and gold pin depiction of the Milky Way. Above it, a laser engraved guilloché sun. Pulling the entire watch together is a heat blued sword handset.

If you’re feeling a little ying-and-yang vibes from this watch, you’re absolutely not wrong. It mixes traditional and futuristic elements. Day and night. Blue and white. Gold and black. The De Bethune DB25GMT Starry Varius is a classic example of how to do “complicated” correctly, and coherently. And while the price will keep this far away from an every-day-man’s watchbox, it’s certainly going to be a grail for many-a-common enthusiast.
