EDITORS CHOICE: Favorite Watch to Wear to Work?
With yesterday being Labor Day, Craig and I figured it would be a good time for you guys to get to know us a little bit more. Today we are launching our “Editors Choice” series on various topics related to ourselves and our watches. We will utilize this series to answer questions posed to us by our reads, and also various topics that come up throughout the year.
We are going to start today with what our favorite watch is to wear to the office. I’ll go first:
Travis:
This is easy. It’s my Omega Speedmaster Professional (Ref. 311.30.42.30.01.005). While I could probably write an entire article on why this model was on my list of ultimate luxury watches, I will keep it brief. This is the Manual Wind with Hesalite crystal. While I find there to be a healthy love for the sapphire, there’s just something about the charm of the domed Hesalite that reminds me of the shuttle. I know this watch wasn’t taking design queues from it, it’s just a watch that screams “Let’s go to Space!”. Since I mostly sit behind a desk all day, I don’t scratch it up, and I find the little bubbled edges aesthetically pleasing. The manual wind movement just feels lovely winding every morning, and I can’t help but enjoy the idea that this tiny mechanical machine gets to be mine.
It’s also a fun added story that this watch ended up being a gift from a very dear friend of mine who wanted to be the one to gift me my attainable grail after a particularly difficult financial year (Thanks COVID). So between the watch itself being a joy to look at, and the story behind why it’s on my wrist in the first place, this is my favorite watch to wear to work.
Craig:
I would definitely choose the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (Ref. 15400ST). I’m a lawyer, so I have to dress myself up at least a little bit when I go in the office (although less so these days). The Royal Oak represents a timeless design from the master of watch design, Gerald Genta. The octagonal case beset with screws is iconic in the watch community (maybe second only to the Patek Philippe Nautilus, though a case can be made for either Genta designed watch). While I say anything goes and personally also wear the Royal Oak with sweats or shorts, it really looks great with business attire. I personally prefer the 15400 to the newer 15500 because I feel the “Automatic” at 6 o’clock evens out the dial perfectly (it is not present on the 15500).
The Royal Oak may not be my most complimented watch. Surely it is a collectors watch. Those who know, know. But it is my favorite piece, right along with my steel Daytona. I could only wear the Royal Oak for the rest of my life and be pretty content.
