THE JUICE:
The Speedmaster ‘57 has always been a bit less popular of an option when it comes to the entire Speedmaster Chronograph space. They’ve often had a more convoluted and awkward configuration and found themselves kind of pigeon-holed into a Racing Chronograph position - Largely in-part by the brand’s positioning of the watch. With this revamped collection, it seems Omega is aware of the utility and audience this watch appeals to, and bringing out some nice new feature sets to the ‘57 Collection.
The main appeal to these, is the unique options that the watch comes with. For one, there is a sapphire case-back option to display the beautifully decorated 9906 Caliber Omega movement. Additionally, the broad arrow handset looks great against the sandblasted dials. There is 3 identical (save for the color) dials, and one very different dial.
The first comes with a slick blue, green, and (all-new) burgundy. The contrasting dual sub-dials at 9 and 3 o’clock aren’t intrusive and clean the watch up quite a bit from previous iterations. The 4th iteration is a beautifully “vintage” dial. The black dial features a faux-tina lume (yeah, I know, a lot of people hate it), but it gives the watch a unique patina vibe. The date at 6 o’ clock looks really clean, and doesn’t break up the dial at all. The watch on a flat stainless steel bracelet with brushed links and polished end-links looks fantastic. And considering how popular the CK-2915 has been historically, the new model is far more price-attainable than seeking out it’s million dollar predecessor.
The case has been slimmed down quite a bit. The watches more popular Moonwatch 3861 cousin measures in at a fairly large 13.58mm, while the new Speedmaster ‘57 measures in at a thinner and more manageable 12.9mm. This is largely due to the hand-wind movement instead of the thicker automatic found in the sapphire moonwatch.
Overall, I’m surprised, but equally excited to see the Speedmaster ‘57 making a bit of a comeback in a way that doesn’t feel so specific to racing. It’s a more modern alternative to the Moonwatch without disrespecting the original.
How much is the new Omega Speedmaster ‘57?
On bracelet, the watch will come in at a modesy $8,600 USD, while the leather model will be $8,300 USD.
