The Celebrities with the "Lefty" Rolex GMT-Master II 126720 VTNR
It’s been two months since Rolex launched the only lefty watch in their current lineup, the Rolex GMT-Master II Ref. 126720VTNR. By now we have started this controversial, yet still coveted, watch trickle out to the masses. While the watch market, like the stock market and crypto market, has taken a hit recently, the watch (which retails for $11,250 USD on jubilee bracelet $11,050 USD on oyster bracelet) is still commanding between $50,000 USD and $60,000 USD on the secondary market. Interestingly, like the Tiffany Blue Patek Philippe 5711, the 126720VTNR has found its way onto the wrist of many celebrities as opposed to everyday watch collectors. I thought I would take a look at the celebrities that have been allocated a piece and whether they are wearing it on the/their right wrist.
Roger Federer’s ROlex GMT-Master II 126720VTNR on Jubilee
Perhaps the most obvious owner of a the “Sprite” or whatever you want to call it, is all-time tennis great Roger Federer. That is because the Swiss Federer is a Rolex ambassador (so he definitely did not pay for his watch). Federer was spotted wearing the jubilee variation when visiting the Mercedes AMG F1 Box during the Barcelona F1 GP on May 22, 2022. I will just note that Federer was wearing the watch on his left wrist.
Reece James ROlex GMT-Master II 126720VTNR On Jubilee
Shortly before Federer was spotted wearing the VTNR, Chelsea soccer player Reece James was also spotted wearing the watch, also on a jubilee bracelet. Yes, James was also wearing the left-handed watch (meant to be worn on your right wrist) on his left wrist.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Rolex GMT-Master II 126720VTNR on Jubilee
AC Milan won their first Serie A championship in 11 years on May 22, 2022, defeating Sassuolo 3-0. On May 23rd, 40-year old Swedish Striker for AC Milan celebrated the championship with his teammates. Zlatan was wearing some pretty nice wrist-wear during the celebration. He was wearing a GMT-Master II VTNR on jubilee. He was even wearing the watch on his right wrist (the “correct” wrist). While Zlatan is technically right-footed, he has a powerful left-footed strike. I’m not sure, however, whether he is right-handed or left-handed, but he does wear the watch as its meant to be worn.
Declan Rice’s Rolex GMT-Master II 126720VTNR on Oyster
There seems to be a pattern of footballers being allocated the highly coveted lefty GMT. West Ham United and England national team defensive midfielder and centre-back Declan Rice was spotted accepting his player of the year award on May 10, 2022 wearing the GMT-Master II 126720VTNR on oyster bracelet. Rice was seen wearing it on his left wrist, but hey, if you can get allocated a lefty Rolex wear it on whatever wrist you want.
Neymar’s Rolex GMT-Master II 126720VTNR on Oyster
I have previously written about Neymar’s troubling relationship with fake watches. However, the Brazilian forward for Paris Saint-Germain does have a pretty nice collection of real watches. One of the newest from his collection is a GMT-Master II Ref. 126720VTNR on oyster bracelet. Neymar was recently seen vacationing and taking selfies in Dubai. While on the trip he was spotted wearing the left-handed GMT, and on his right wrist. Neymar has been spotted in the past wearing Rolexes (and other brands) almost exclusively on his right wrist. It is safe to say that he is probably left-handed (though I guess that doesn’t matter much for soccer). With that taken into account, the new lefty GMT is the perfect watch for Neymar.
Karim Benzema’s Rolex GMT-Master II 126720VTNR on Oyster
There have been so many professional footballers wearing the VTNR in recent week, one wonders if they have the same hook-up. Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema was spotted celebrating his team’s May 28, 2022 UEFA Champions League 1-0 victory over Liverpool wearing the Rolex GMT-Master II 126720VTNR on an oyster bracelet. Hopefully, I find some non-soccer players wearing the watch too, so I can add some variety to this list.
Update: July 17, 2022
Russel Westbrook’s Rolex GMT-Master II 126720VTNR on Jubilee
NBA star and Lakers Point Guard Russell Westbrook is the latest athlete to be spotted wearing the lefty Rolex GMT-Master II Ref. 126720VTNR. He was seen wearing it on July 16th while at an NBA Summer League game. Westbrook’s watch is the variation on jubilee bracelet. Westbrook apparently isn’t left-handed, as he is wearing the watch in his left wrist.
