20 Best Square Watches from Affordable to Luxury
Traditionally when we think of a watch we picture a circular shape, because that’s obviously the most common. Over the years square watches have gained more of a following through both heritage brands that have been creating them since the start of the 20th century, and newer brands making big impacts. Our list of the 21 best square watches covers pieces that are both iconic and easily recognizable square cases, to fresher, more recent takes on the symmetrical shape. We also included a range of price points and styles so there’s a little something for everyone looking to add a square watch to their established, or budding collection. Lets get into it.
Tag Heuer Monaco
Price: $7,800 USD; Case Size: 39mm; Water Resistance: 100m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Sapphire.
The Tag Heuer Monaco may not have been the first square wristwatch, but it is one of the most iconic and well-known square watches. It’s not just the shape that gives significance to this piece but the fact that it was developed with the goal of creating the first automatic chronograph. In 1969 Heuer, Hamilton-Buren, Breitling, Dubois-Depraz partnered to create the Caliber 11 Chronograph movement. The movement was intended for the Carrera and Autavia collections, but Jack took it a step further and introduced another chronograph to also house the movement. He worked with Swiss case maker, Erwin Piquerez, to create a completely new case. Piquerez came up with a waterproof square case. The watch really captured attention after the 1971 film, “Le Mans.” Steve McQueen, inspired by his Formula 1 hero Jo Siffert (who was an ambassador for Heuer), wore the Monaco in the film. Today, the Monaco has been created with a variety of dial colorways, but we still love the model that continues to capture the original style with the blue dial with red details, horizontal steel indexes, and the crown on the left. The piece is available for $7,800 USD.
Santos de Cartier
Price: $7,750 USD; Case Size: 39.8mm; Water Resistance: 100m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Sapphire.
The Cartier Santos paved that way for the square wristwatch. It was Introduced in the early 1900s by Louis Cartier for inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont. Santos-Dumont experimented with hot air balloons and planes taking timed trips around the Eiffel Tower. He realized his pocket watch wasn’t cutting it and needed something more easily accessible for his adventures, and when you have friends like Cartier, who better to help you with your watch needs. So, the Cartier Santos was born - the first square watch intended for a man’s wrist. It was a big step for Cartier since at the time wrist watches were really worn by women. It wouldn’t be until the World Wars that wrist watches would become popular for men. Just a few years after creating the model for Alberto Santos-Dumont Cartier released the model for public sale and had it available in yellow gold and platinum. The Cartier Santos today, still embodies the characteristics of its original version. The bezel and the screws along the bezel have gotten slightly bigger and you can now find a date window on the classic roman numeral dial. The Cartier Santos is truely timeless, and the piece is available for $7,750 USD.
