The 14 Best Dress Watches Under $1000 For 2024

Originating from the pocket watch, dress watches have retained an almost unchanged and classic look over the years. Guilloché finishing, blued hands, and precious metals are ever present on dress watches. And they are often associated with some of the oldest manufacturers and watchmakers, whose very founders were instrumental in driving the industry forward in its earliest days. Due to their immense heritage, many dress watches are real works of art, that exhibit fantastic horological design and fabulous craftsmanship. While back in the day dress watches were the most popular watches to wear, today a dress watch is a piece that we reserve for those special occasions. A good dress watch is the piece that ties every great collection together. However, they are often inaccessible and unavailable due to some hefty price tags associated to them, so finding one under $1000 is tricky, and finding a great one under $1,000 is even more difficult. But we managed to find 13 great dress watches, all under $1,000 USD.

Tissot Le Locle Powermatic 80 20th Anniversary

Tissot Le Locle Powermatic 80 20th Anniversary

Price: $750; Case: 39mm; Water Resistance: 30m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Sapphire.

Tissot is the perfect place to start off a guide of our favorite dress watches under $1,000. They are a powerhouse in the sub-$1000 range and the Le Locle Powermatic 80 is their super-star of a dress watch. Powered by the same movement as the ultra-popular PRX, this dress watch boasts a super-useful 80-hours power-reserve, which is a little unusual for a dress watch. Named after the famous town of Le Locle in the heartland of the Swiss watchmaking region, this special edition really emphasizes on the heritage aspect with the fabulous guilloche-pattern dial and blue handset and numerals. Available on both a leather strap and a metal bracelet to give it that modern touch, The Le Locle Powermatic 80 retails for $750 USD

Zodiac Olympos

Zodiac Olympos Blue Dial

Price: $447.99; Case: 37mm; Water Resistance: 50m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Sapphire.

Zodiac is a brand best known for their iconic and colorful dive watches: the Super Sea-Wolf being the most famous. But they are definitely not a one trick pony. And the the Olympos clearly proves this. It is different in many ways, starting with the its shape. The asymmetrical case is a conversation starter, and we can almost guarantee that you won’t be able to find anything that comes close to being as eye-catching. Being a Zodiac, they have shunned the traditional colors of a dress watch and opted for something a little more playful and alternative: I personally love the blue-on-blue colorway, which really makes the sunburst finish on the dial pop out. And now that it is on sale for $447.99 USD, this piece is an absolute steal.

Baltic MR Roulette

Baltic MR Roulette

Price: $594; Case: 36mm; Water Resistance: 30m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Hesalite.

Baltic has been making waves in the microbrand world for a while now with their vintage inspired pieces. Enthusiasts and collectors, us included, really appreciate this brand’s mission: making high-quality and accessible pieces that will get people into vintage style watches (which will usually cost you an arm and a leg if you’re lucky). The MR Roulette is their latest release, and I couldn’t be more in love with it. As you might already know, MR stands for ‘Micro-Rotor’, which is a very elegant form of automatic winding (which is often found in dress watches- but more on that shortly). The MR Roulette release has brought a fabulous new dial configuration (and a black dial, which certainly in high demand) to the collection. Baltic has really outdone themselves with this piece. It retails for approximately $594 USD.

Baltic MR Classic

Baltic MR Classic Salmon

Price: $594; Case: 36mm; Water Resistance: 30m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Hesalite.

It is hard to explain how fabulous the Baltic MR collection is, so we thought we’d add the Classic version as well to really ram it home. The smaller dimensions and overall design of the case with the domed hesalite crystal just scream vintage: Baltic got it spot on. When this watch was initially released, it was one of the only Micro-Rotor movement available in the sub-$1,500 watch range. Few brands make micro-rotor movements today, it is really a heritage feature, and even less make them this affordable and good looking. The finishing on the movement is high quality and definitely exceeds its affordable pricetag. The dial and strap options available with this piece mean that you can really make it your own. It, too, retails for approximately $594 USD

Hamilton American Classic Boulton

Hamilton American Classic Boulton

Price: $745; Case: 27mm; Water Resistance: 30m; Movement: Quartz; Crystal: Mineral.

Like many of its European counterparts, Hamilton started off producing pocket watches (though in the United States). But by the1940s, Hamilton had fully embraced the production of wristwatches. One of their most famous designs is the Boulton, which was first presented to the public in 1941. Brought back from the archives in the 1980s, the Boulton has been immensely popular ever since, and it’s obvious why. Many dress watches that we know today have many elements that they have inherited from that era (notably the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso). However, finding one with that pedigree under $1,000 isn’t that easy. The art deco spirit of this particular model is incredibly attractive and it’s made even cooler because the watch was featured in the latest Indiana Jones movie. And if that’s not enough, the fact that it comes in at $745 USD should persuade you.

Farer Durham Pullman

Farer Durham Pullman

Price: $1,050; Case: 38.5mm; Water Resistance: 50m; Movement: Manual Winding; Crystal: Sapphire.

The Farer Durham Pullman is the most expensive watch on the list at just over $1000 ($1050). And yes, the watch comes in at just over our $1,000 price-point. But to me that extra $50 is more than worth it, especially when you have a deeper look into the watch. Farer has been rewriting the rulebook on designing watches for a while; all their designs are quirky, playful, bold, but not too crazy. With this dress watch, they have shunned some classic design codes whilst embracing others, most notably the revered cushion case, to create a gorgeous piece. Impeccably finished, this is the best money can buy in this price range in terms of finishing and spec sheet and is probably worth a lot more than its price tag. Powered by a customized Sellita hand wound movement, this watch is a meeting of old and new. If this fabulous green color doesn’t quite do it for you, Farer have a number of other unique dial variations and colorways. It retails for $1,050 USD

Jack Mason Ellum

Price: $949; Case: 38.mm; Water Resistance: 50m; Movement: Manual Winding; Crystal: Sapphire.

Hopping back across the pond to the USA, American microbrand Jack Mason recently released a dress watch that arguably has the best dial on this list. The Ellum Manual Wind sticks to the simple and elegant essence of a dress watch. The bold green and gold colorway is very striking, much like the Farer, but it is delivered with a different panache: the linen textured dial is just sublime. The closer you look at the dial, the more fantastic small details emerge from the woodwork. All of this is paired with and incredibly high-quality leather strap and slim case (at just 9mm thich), which will make you forget you’re even wearing it. It retails for $949 USD

Yema Urban Classic

Yema Urban Classic

Price: $690; Case: 37.5mm; Water Resistance: 100m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Sapphire.

Founded in 1948, French brand YEMA has had somewhat of an impressive resurgence in recent years. The quality of their timepieces are improving year on year, and their designs are stepping it up a notch or three at every release. And the Urban Classic is just another part of this fabulous regenesis. Inspired by a design from the 1960s, the Urban classic also gives off a slightly more utilitarian feel than the other dress watches on this list with its 100m water resistance and clearly the military influence. This is also the only microbrand watch on the list with its own in-house calibre. The Urban Classic retails for $690 USD

Mido Belluna Royal Gent

Mido Belluna Royal Gent

Price: $840; Case: 41.3mm; Water Resistance: 30m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Sapphire.

The Belluna Royal Gent from MIDO is on this list for one reason and one reason only (aside from the price that is), and that is the dial. The guilloché sunray pattern is absolutely mesmerizing and will keep your gaze entertained for hours. To make things even better, it is powered by a top-of-the-line ETA movement. And some good news for collectors and enthusiasts with larger wrists this time, MIDO has given it a 41mm case. This that it will still look well-proportioned and slim on most wrists. It is also available with a metal bracelet if you fancy giving it that modern touch. It retails for $840 USD

Seiko Presage Cocktail Time

Seiko Presage Cocktail Time SRPB46

Price: $495; Case: 40.5mm; Water Resistance: 50m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Hardlex.

It would be criminal not to mention the Seiko Presage in this list. The Presage Cocktail Time is the go-to dress watch for any collector on a budget. The dial finishing and colors are insane, the movement is reliable, and the price tag is more than accessible. I particularly like the rose gold (plated) Ref. SRPB46 with brown sunray dial. This piece doesn’t have your typical sunray dial. Instead, lines radiate from the center giving the watch additional visual interest. The SRPB46 is sure to be a conversation starter and is only $495 USD

LIP Churchill T26 Auto

LIP Churchill T26 Auto

Price: $450; Case: Stainless Steel, 26mm; Water Resistance: 30m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Sapphire.

Another watch from a historic but largely unknown French Brand, the Montres Lip Churchill T26 Auto is a homage to the 1930s art deco design. Named after Sir Winston Churchill after he was gifted a solid gold model in the 1948, the T26 is the latest model in the collection and is the only mechanical and automatic piece in the collection. This watch really encapsulates the classic style that was first produced in the original workshops in Besançon, just over the border from La Chaux de Fonds. The T26 retails for approximately $450 USD

Lorier Zephyr

Lorier Zephyr

Price: $499; Case: Stainless Steel, 31mm; Water Resistance: 30m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Sapphire.

Lorier, a New York based brand, has gained popularity in recent years producing vintage-inspired tool watches that not only look the part, but are incredibly high quality. But Lorier has produced watches that aren’t tool watches. One example of this is the Zephyr, the brand’s dress watch. The watch features guilloche-pattern dial and tonneau case that really give off 1930s vibes. And at $499 USD, it’s truly a great deal.

Timex Marlin

Timex Marlin

Price: $209; Case: Steel, 34mm; Water Resistance: 30m; Movement: Manual Winding; Crystal: Acrylic.

First released in the 1960s, the Timex Marlin is quintessentially a dress watch. Timex watches are loved by budget enthusiasts because their offering is second to none in terms of both quality and price point. This iteration of the Marlin goes one further by packing in a whole lot of heritage. This model is a re-issue of the 1960s model, meaning that the spec sheet, dimensions, and aesthetics are all identical to the original. This authentic design is packed with veritable vintage charm. The dial has an incredibly distinct look that is worthy of a watch far more expensive than its friendly price tag would suggest. If you want a watch that has an authentic heritage without breaking the bank, this Timex Marlin is for you. It retails for $209 USD

Orient Bambino

Price: $270; Case: Steel, 38.4mm; Water Resistance: 30m; Movement: Automatic; Crystal: Mineral.

If you are looking for something affordable, classic and high quality, the Orient Bambino Version 7 is a great choice. We particularly like this iteration of the Bambino as it comes in just larger than 38mm (by 44mm lug-to-lug), making the watch incredibly wearable. The Bambino also comes in a black dial or a white dial with yellow gold-plated case. So there are plenty of options for that dressy occassion. It retails for $270 USD.
