The Best His and Hers Watches to Wear this Valentine’s Day and Beyond
Valentine’s Day is here and you might be thinking “what should I get my significant other?” Well, as watch collectors, we thought, why not a watch. So if you want to get the love of your life something special and also want an excuse to get yourself something nice, why not go with matching couples watches? In this list we look at some of our favorite affordable and luxury “his and hers” watches to get you through Valentine’s Day and beyond.
Tudor Black Bay S&G
When you’re looking for a coordinating watch set to get as a couple, you really can’t go wrong with a Tudor piece.
If you didn’t already know, Rolex was founded by German entrepreneur Hans Wilsdorf in 1920, when the name was first trademarked, and just six years later the trademark was filed for Tudor. Wilsdorf created the brand to provide a more affordable, but no less classic watch to the horology enthusiast. In fact, the two brand's models often both have in common the well-loved Oyster case and the self-winding ‘rotor’ movement.
One great option to go with Tudor for a couple’s set is this stunning Tudor Black Bay 31 S&G model, which comes in a number of variations, from size (31mm/36mm/39mm/41mm). The models range from simple and sleek to sportier to icy pieces that would make any wrist enthusiast's eyes sparkle with joy and prices range between $4,925-$7,425. We’d suggest the 39mm Version for men, and the 31mm version for the lady, though if she’s not afraid of a little heft, the 36mm wears slightly smaller on the wrist.
Or, if the dive watch isn’t exactly your partner’s style, there’s always the Glamour Date 31 mm steel case model with a gorgeous patent leather strap, which goes for $3,375 USD.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual
Speaking of Rolex, you really can’t come up with a more classic gifting option than Tudor’s “big brother”.
With this brand, there is an endless array of options you can pick from but a classic, and potentially adorable, pair to get from this luxury brand is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual.
Here are a few reasons why:
1) The Oyster Perpetual model is a staple of the Rolex legacy. While new models are regularly introduced by the brand, there is something timeless, and dare we say romantic, about having a timepiece that resembles one of the brand’s OG pieces.
2) The Oyster Perpetual comes in a bevy of sizes from 28mm - 41mm. So no matter what you’re partner’s wrist or hand size is, you’ll definitely be able to find an option to accommodate them.
3) This Rolex model comes in a rainbow wave of colors, from canary yellow to baby pink to the brand’s ‘Celebration’ model, first introduced in 2020, which sports a light turquoise blue as the background hue with candy pink, yellow coral red, and green bubbles on the dial. The standard Rolex Oyster Perpetual goes for $6,100 USD.
Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Collection
When it comes to classic, luxury brands, you can’t talk about his and her’s watches without mentioning Swiss brand Vacheron Constantin.
The brand, which was first established in 1755 by independent watchmaker Jean-Marc Vacheron, is one of the oldest and most timeless horology brands you can get your hands on.
If you and your partner have more romantically old-school tastes, we recommend going with a timepiece from the Traditionnelle Collection. As the name implies, the items in this lineup could easily stylistically fit in place in the 17th century as they could in the 21st century.
One specific piece we recommend you check out is the Traditionnelle Manuel-Winding , which retails for $29,600 USD. This 18k, 33mm model features the iconic styling of the Traditionnelle Collection with a grooved case back and railroad-style-minute-counter, and a bezel set with 54 round-cut diamonds. Or the more masculine leaning option of the 38mm in pink gold, sans bling, which retails for $23,700 USD.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
With a couple’s watch set, a few of the key elements to look for is a classic timepiece that will stay in style throughout the entire course of your relationship and for a piece that would suit both partner’s aesthetics.
One version that immediately comes to mind is Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Selfwinding model. The watch comes in a miriad of sizes and color options, although, our suggestion is hands down the classic with the 15510 for the men, and the 77451 for the ladies . While the men’s Royal Oak comes in a classic 41mm size, the women’s comes in a more modest 34mm in stainless steel. The watch is a classic take on the Royal Oak with a either blue, grey, or white dial and “Grande Tapisserie” texture. You’re definitely getting a watch with a lot of heritage, that you can match with boo on any occasion. Both retail for $27,800 USD for the 15510, and $30,200 for the 77451.
Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse
With Patek Philippe, there are an endless number of models to go with for a couple’s watch set like the Gerald Genta-designed Nautilus, with a 40mm men’s model ref. 5711/1A-010 and the 35mm ladies' ref. 7118/1A-001 both priced around $24,000 USD at retail. Though, with those watches being largely unavailable, we thought of another option - Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse collection
The shape, an elliptical case, between a circle and a rectangle, already stands out from so many brands, both heritage and indie, on the market that it would make it a striking couples’ set on its own. But there is also a highly romantic aspect to this model as well. With a design inspired by the principle of the “gold section”, the watch has a sense of “divine” proportion as expressed in great works of art and architecture. Your watch, like your love, represents style and a sense of inner harmony that is pleasing to the eye.
The 5738R model, which retails for $36,900 USD, was released in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Golden Ellipse. With a rose-gold “grande-taille” version, adorned with a black sunburst dial and rose gold applied hour markers and slender hands, the watch makes for a stunning piece for men and women alike. Not to mention, the brand also offers matching cuff links with an ebony black sunburst inlay in a rose-gold frame.
Cartier Santos and Panthere
Cartier has been a go-to brand for gifts for a partner since the company’s inception in 1847.
There are so many models Cartier has to offer for couples of mixed tastes, wrist sizes, and color palette preferences, you really couldn’t go wrong with any option.
However, one model we would recommend grabbing for a stylishly matching couples set is one of the brand’s classic models, the Santos de Cartier watch which retails for $7,050 USD. The Santos de Cartier comes in either “Small, Medium, or Large” with the small measuring in at 35mm (but wears a little smaller because of it’s case shape), the medium at 37mm, and the large at 40mm. Because of the unique shape, on the men’s versions, they do wear slightly bigger. And if the Large isn’t enough, the brand features an “Extra Large” Chronograph model that still fits the collection well.
For the ladies, the Panthere fits perfectly alongside the Santos de Cartier both in style and shape, and those we feel would be a perfect compliment for the Santos de Cartier. And if it’s good enough for the Roy Family, we can’t help throw the suggestion out there as well. The Panthere de Cartier comes in a number of options, but the traditional stainless steel model starts at $4,150 USD.
Oris Divers Sixty-Five Cotton Candy Stainless Steel
Oris is a great brand to pick from for its variety of more classically designed timepieces, but also for its more bold options, like the Oris Divers Sixty-Five ‘Cotton Candy’ watch, which retails for $2,550 USD. You can also opt in for this model’s beautiful cotton-candy blue or mint green option, but the way that bright pink option just screams “Valentine’s Day” or brings to mind candy-hearts reminiscent of childhood crushes in a way, it would be a shame not to get it as at least one-half of a couple’s set.
The 38mm case with a lug width of 19mm makes the watch one of the less-weighty but no less substantial pieces to wear on this list. And with a brushed stainless steel case to offset the bright hue of the dial, the watch is easy to style into a variety of ensembles, especially for a date night wardrobe. IWC Ingenieur
IWC has a number of watches in the Portofino Collection that match. But we feel - Especially with the rising popularity of women wearing mens watches - That the brand’s new Ingenieur fits perfectly into that category. If we really want to break it down into masculine and feminine, the Titanium option would be a fantastic men’s watch, with the aqua dial stainless steel model for boo works incredible well. The watch measures in at a modest 40mm, features a fantastic textured dial, and comes in a number of color options.
Further, the watch simply has a rich history. It’s going to be incredibly difficult (and expensive) to find a Gerald Genta design for a couple, so the Ingenieur provides a great option for those watch lovers looking for a watch with a storied past without spending hundreds of thousands on a couple. Price for the ingenieur is $11,700 USD in Stainless Steel, and $14,600 USD in Titanium. You can read our review of the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 here.
Breitling Chronomat
While you’re still brainstorming gift ideas, may we suggest turning your head towards Breitling?
The Swiss luxury watchmaker is known for their classic timepieces that suit wrist enthusiasts across the gender and age spectrum, with details like the brand’s highly accurate chronographs. However, the company’s latest launch is sure to make for a special Valentine’s Day treat.
In collaboration with Spice Girls alum and fashion designer Victoria Beckham, Breitling introduced a limited-edition line of timepieces dubbed Chronomat Automatic 36 Victoria Beckham.
The collaboration, which is limited to only 1,500 pieces in either stainless steel or a vibrant yellow gold, retains the brand’s classic Chronomat features like the metal rouleaux bracelet and raised rider tabs at the 15-minute marks, but is designed in colorways inspired by Beckham’s Spring/Summer 2024 palette.
The stainless steel watches in the collection retail for $5,600 to $5,950 USD, while the 18-karat yellow gold versions sell for $29,500 USD and are now available for pre-order.
On the men’s side, the traditional Breitling Chronomat will fit the bill well for a matching watch. There are a number of matching options in the collection, but we’d suggest the more traditional B01 Chronomat. Measuring in at 40mm or 42mm, the watch features the brand’s In-House automatic movement, and a more rugged look. Price for the Men’s Chronomat is a relatively modest $8,750 USD.
Zenith Defy Skyline
Zenith is a Swiss-based watch brand launched in 1865, and is known for being one of the most precise watch manufacturers in the game with the world’s first high-frequency automatic chronograph.
If you’re looking for a precise and stylish watch brand to shop from this Valentine’s Day, you can’t go wrong with Zenith, especially from the brand’s Defy Skyline collection. This collection has taken inspiration from the unique octagonal geometry of Zenith’s early Deft models without attempting simply trying to mimic the past.
One model we recommend going with is the Defy Skyline 36 model, 36mm steel watch with an octagonal case and a faceted bezel, specifically the pastel pink and pastel green versions, which both retail for $8,500 USD (You can read our full review here).
On the Men’s side, Zenith offers a number of options in the Skyline collection, though we’d recommend pairing the Defy 36 with the more masculine Defy 41. The watch measures in at 41mm and comes in a number of color options, and wear’s incredibly well (again, you can read our full review here), and pairs incredibly well with the brand’s smaller options. Price for the Defy 41 is $9,000 USD.
Tissot PRX Powermatic 80
One of the breakout hits of the last couple years, has been the relaunch of the Tissot PRX line of watches. Punching well above their weight class, the models breathed some new life into one of the brand’s heritage watches. At Wrist Enthusiast, we’ve personally been able to review a number of PRX watches, which you can read here, and here, and have found them to look and feel much nicer than their sub-$1000 price would suggest.
And now, they’ve released a 35mm “Unisex” version that pairs perfectly with the larger 41mm "Men’s” 3-hand PRX. Both watches feature the automatic Powermatic movement that’s a staple, and the brand’s workhorse. Further, you can actually match the icey-blue “Glacial” dials perfectly. Price for the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 is a modest $695 USD for the 35mm version and $725 USD for the 41mm version.
