The Juice:
First released in 2023 for the 60th Anniversary of the Carrera Chronograph, the ‘Skipper pays tribute to the New York Yacht Club’s 1967 America’s Cup challenger Intrepid. This release marked the rebirth of TAG Heuer’s nautical chronographs, a tradition that started in the 1940s and ‘50s.
The most noticeable difference between these two ‘Skipper’ Chronographs is definitely the brand-new rose gold case. This is a new level of sophistication that will make the ‘Skipper’ even more desirable to collectors who are looking to get their hands on this piece of Nautical Watchmaking- regatta timers are a rare occurrence these days. The case is beautifully finished giving the watch a refined but also utilitarian feel- it is meant to be admired just as much as it is meant to be used.
Using the same ‘Glassbox’ crystal as the rest Carrera Collection, the watch gives us a super open and unobstructed view of the gorgeous dial from any angle. This is crucial for sailors, who need to be able to read the chronograph in a single glance in the heat of the race. The dial is still that elegant shade of blue that made the steel ‘Skipper’ so popular. The indices and handset are now rose gold to match the case. The star of the show is still the Teal, Green, and Orange segmented sub-dial that acts as the countdown timer. These colours were inspired by the iconic 1967 America’s Cup Yacht Intrepid, that was decorated with these unmissable tones.
The ’Skipper’ is powered by TAG Heuer’s super-competent, accurate, and reliable Calibre 02 that power the rest of Carrera Chronographs. Viewable through the Sapphire Caseback, it has been beautifully finished, adding to that super-luxurious feel.
This chronograph comes on a blue fabric strap that really adds to that maritime feel. It comes with a Rose Gold pin buckle to match.
The brand-new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Skipper is a fantastic celebration of the brand’s heritage. Combining luxury and desirability with functionality and reliability is definitely a winning formula.
