THE JUICE:
Omega first introduced a similar dial on something other than the Chronoscope back in the 30’s. The watches were very similar, however the colors, size, and utlity was slightly different.
So what is a Chronoscope? On the Speedmaster Chronoscope, you’ll find three seperate meters - A Tachymetre, a Pulsometer, and a Telemeter. The Tachymetre is the same as a regular Speedmaster. This is used to measure speed over a designated time (Think Miles Per Hour averages). The Pulsometer measures heart rate of the wearer. The Telemeter is used to measure the distance between a designated place and the wearer.
As far as dial layout goes, it’s pretty straight forward. Around the bezel you have the Tachymetre. It’s a standard feature of the Omega Speedmaster Professional, and the Chronoscope model doesn’t differer here. Inside the crystal, you’ll find what sets this model apart from regular speedmasters. Similar to the ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ models, the chronograph subdials are at 9 o’ clock and 3 o’ clock. Central on the dial are a series of rings. This is the Telemeter, and the Pulsometer. They circle through the subdials, and while I can see some people complaining about that, I think it looks sharp and easy to read.
Inside the Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope is an all new In-House movement. The Omega Caliber 9908 features a beautifully decorated mainplate - as the movement is largely behind it. You can see the Co-Axial balance in the bottom right of the movement. This actually reminds me a bit of an “open-heart” architechture, but Omega style. The movement has a sillicone balance, and is hand wound - like a traditional Speedmaster. The movement has a 60 hour power reserve, and 44 jewels.
Overall, to me, this is a slam dunk for Omega. In what seems like an endless array of Speedmaster Limited Editions, the Speedmaster Chronoscope is a breath of fresh air. Is it still quintessentially a Speedmaster? Yes. Is it boring? Absolutely not. And since there are 7 varations of this watch to choose from, there will be no shortage of options for enthusiasts. Who is this watch for? Speedmaster lovers who love the idea of having a different kind of Speedmaster. And I’m definitely here for that.
How much is the Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope?
