Jonah Hill’s Watch Collection - From Rolex to Patek Philippe
Jonah Hill may be best known for his comedic chops, having starring roles in Superbad (2007) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Most recently Hill was seen in the Netflix disaster comedy Don’t Look Up playing the president’s inept son and confidant. Beyond acting, Hill seems to be an under the radar watch collector. He has regularly been seen wearing some of the most sought after Rolex and Patek Philippe models. I will take a look at Hill’s collection, including some of the pieces he has warn in films.
Jonah Hill’s Rolex Watches
Jonah Hill’s collection includes quite a few classic Rolex watches. One of the pieces he is spotted wearing most regularly is the discontinued Rolex Submariner Ref. 116610LV “Hulk”. This Submariner gets the Hulk moniker from the green bezel and dial, which differentiates it from the standard black steel Submariner (and also make its a lot more expensive on the secondary market). The Hulk was discontinued in 2020 and replaced by the Ref. 126610LV with green bezel and black dial (nicknamed the Starbucks). Because it is only now available on the secondary market, the price has gone up significantly. You cab pick up a Rolex Submariner “Hulk” on the grey marked for between $28,000 and $39,000 USD.
Hill has also been spotted wearing one of the more underrated and under-appreciated Rolexes on the market, the Milgauss. The Milgauss is unique among Rolexes as it has anti-magnetic shielding to protect the watch against modern high-tech electronics. The original Milgauss was able to withstand magnetic resonance beyond 1000 gauss. While the every day watch collector may not need this protection, it is always interesting to find Rolexes with these additional “tool” features (and indeed Rolex is the ultimate tool watch). The Rolex Milgauss Ref. 116400GV with green sapphire crystal retails for $9,150 USD. You can pick one up on the secondary market for between $13,000 and $14,000 USD.
Who doesn’t love a Rolex Daytona? Well, Jonah Hill appears to love the Daytona model because he has a couple. Hill has been photographed wearing a steel Rolex Daytona Ref. 116520 and he also seemed to wear this watch in the 2011 film Moneyball. The 116520 is the discontinued Daytona model that came immediately before the current model with ceramic bezel (Ref. 116500). You can pick up a Rolex Daytona Ref. 116520 for between $30,000 and $34,000 on the secondary market.
Hill has also been spotted wearing perhaps the most sought after Rolex Daytona currently on the market, the gold Rolex Daytona “John Mayer” Ref. 116508 with green dial. Nicknamed the John Mayer Daytona because he said in an interview that he felt the model was a steal among Rolexes, the piece has skyrocketed in market price. While the watch retails $37,550 USD, it will cost you $150,000 USD on the secondary market.
Jonah Hill’s Patek Philippe Watches
Hill also has a couple of Patek Philippes, and if you guessed that they were Nautilises, you guessed correctly. The Patek Philippe Nautilus might be the hottest watch currently on the market so it’s a great watch to have in your collection. Hill has been spotted on multiple occasions wearing the steel Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A-010 with blue dial. This piece was discontinued in 2021 and subsequently followed-up by the limited green dial 5711/1A-014 and the extremely limited Tiffany Blue dial 5711/1A-018. You can pick up the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A-010 on the secondary market for between $200,000 and $250,000 USD.
Hill has also been spotted wearing the stunning yellow gold Patek Philippe Nautilus 3800/01J with blue dial. This discontinued piece, likely from the late 1990s or early 2000s is definitely one of personal favorite gold Nautiluses. The yellow gold case and bracelet just gives makes the piece stand out a little more. You can pick one of these pieces up on the secondary market for between $100,000 and $150,000 USD.
The Watches Worn By Jonah Hill In Film
Jonah Hill has also worn quite a few seemingly high-end timepieces in his movies. Sometimes it is important for a character in a film to wear a watch that seems to match his position or role. In the 2016 film War Dogs Hill portrayed real life arms dealer Efraim Diveroli. Diveroli’s company, AEY Inc., was a major weapons contractor for the U.S. Department of Defense. The U.S. government eventually suspended AEY for violating its contract after AEY provided Chinese ammunition and attempted to hide the origins by repackaging the ammunition, and Diveroli was ultimately sentenced to four years in prison. For his portrayal of Diveroli, Hill wore a Rolex Submariner Ref. 16610. Since the film took place between 2006 and 2011 Hill would be wearing the Ref. 16610 with aluminum bezel (not the upgraded 116610 with ceramic bezel). You can pick up a Rolex Submariner Ref. 16610 on the secondary market for between $10,000 and $15,000 USD.
The story goes that Jonah Hill only took $60,000 USD (the Screen Actor’s Guild minimum) to star in 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street (this is confirmed by Hill himself). Apparently this was because Hill desperately wanted to work with acclaimed director Martin Scorsese. In the film Hill plays Donnie Azoff (loosely based on Danny Porush), Jordan Belfort’s (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) right-hand man. Well Hill wears what appears to be a Rolex Daytona Ref. 16528 with black dial (this piece would have a Zenith movement if it was period appropriate for the film). The one problem? The watch Hill is wearing is a prop (or fake, whatever you want to call it). It is actually pretty normal for the prop department to give actor’s fake or prop watches for movies. Why spend tens of thousands of dollars if you can get the same effect for hundreds? If you want to buy a real gold Rolex Daytona Ref. 16528, be prepared to spend between $45,000 and $50,000 on the secondary market.
Watch social media went into overdrive when Hill was spotted in the 2021 film Don’t Look Up wearing what appeared to be a Richard Mille RM052 Skull Tourbillon. However, like his Daytona in The Wolf of Wall Street, this watch is also fake. It makes some sense knowing the real timepiece is extremely limited (only 21 pieces) and extremely expensive $660,000 USD. Better to not blow your film budget on a watch (if you could even get one of these extremely rare watches).
