INTRODUCING: The Revamped Patek Philippe Calatrava (Ref. 5226G)

Patek Philippe has completely renovated the outside of it’s staple dress watch into a more rugged-designed look, and dare-i-say “everyday” design language. The new Calatrava has a number of new features not-typically seen in the standard Patek catalogue, and tones-down the typically dressy offering that’s typically found among the Calatrava Collection.

THE JUICE:

I wouldn’t fault anyone who called the new Calatrava a tool watch at first glance, because, honestly, at first glance it’s got all the staple tool vibes. Save for the measly 30m of water resistance, the black and tan aesthetic, ultra legibility, and unique textured dial absolutely give me some vintage tool-watch feels.

The Calatrava has often been among Patek’s dressiest offerings. The 5226G completely reinvents that notion, and really, entire concept for the brand.

The hobnail design around the edge of the case definitely harkens back to Pilot watches of old. The vintage oversized Arabic numerals also provide hyper-legibility against the textured dial, and even the syringe-style hands provide a more utilitarian aesthetic.

Inside the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5226G is the in-house Calibre 26‑330 SC - a staple automatic movement for Patek in the 3-hand plus Date catalogue. The movement is a workhorse, and beats at a quick 28,800 VpH, while also featuring a 45-Hour power reserve. The movement is beautifully decorated, up to Patek’s standards (as noted by the Patek seal).

I, for one, am thrilled to see more additions added to the Calatrava Collection that aren’t inately dress watches. We’ve seen a worldtimer, and a really cool textured dial with the 6700A. The 5226G feels like a solid and natural extension, and I think will provide some unique longevity to the Calatrava collection that it otherwise hasn’t seen yet.

So, How much is the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5226G?
