Oris Watches in Movies and Television - From Jurassic Park to The Sopranos

As you can probably tell, I have a great interest in watch spotting in television and film. I get a sense of satisfaction out of being the first to figure out a hard to identify watch. So far my crowning achievement has been identifying timepieces in the watches of Squid Game. I have also watch spotted Succession and many other shows, though they were not nearly as difficult.

However, watch spotting Rolex and Patek Philippe’s over and over again is not terribly difficult as we see these watches pop up everywhere, as they’re all over popular culture. I wanted to both challenge myself in my next watch spotting article, while also providing my readers with watches from a high quality brand that were both attainable (no crazy waiting lists) but also on the affordable end of luxury. Having recently reviewed the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze, I thought the brand hit both of these marks. In my research, I realized Oris watches have appeared on both the silver screen and television numerous times over the past few decades. Let’s get into what I found.

Keanu Reeves Wears an Oris Modern Classic 7490 In Constantine

I know I promised you impressive, difficult to make identifications and I promise I’ll get there, but the first spot was somewhat of a gimme. I mean, not every watch identification can be difficult! In the 2005 film Constantine Keanu Reeves (the nicest guy in Hollywood) played John Constantine, a cynical exorcist that had the ability to recognize and communicate with half-angels and half-demons in their true form. Reeves has been known recently to wear Carl F. Bucherer timepieces in the John Wick series and to have gifted his stunt men Rolex Submariners as a thank you after the final film. However, long before the John Wick series, Reeves wore an Oris in Constantine. The exact model is clearly the Modern Classic Ref. 7490. While this piece is discontinued, it is recognizably Oris, with their current Big Crown and Diver models sharing a similar case shape (though they have been updated).

Oris Watches Worn in Jurassic Park 3 And Jurassic World

One of my favorite movie series growing up was most definitely Jurassic Park. Not only did I see the blockbuster films, I read the original source material - the classic Michael Chrichton books. I mean, what 8 year old doesn’t want to see a film about Dinosaurs causing absolute mayhem? In my opinion, the most memorial character of the original trilogy was Sam Neill’s Dr. Alan Grant (sorry all you Jeff Goldblum fans). And while Jurassic Park III (2001) does not reach the heights of the original film, Sam Neill once again stars after being absent in the second film (more Sam Neill is always better).

Neill is wearing a watch throughout the the movie and we manage to get a couple of close-ups that helped me make an identification. Neill is wearing an Oris Big Crown 3 (BC3) Day-Date Ref. 7500. You can see this because of the shape of the case and lugs, the placement of the day and date, and also the curved “Automatic” and “25 Jewels” near 10 and 2 o’clock. This piece just looks like something that a paleontologist like Alan Grant would wear. The watch has been discontinued but they are readily available on the secondary market.

Oris’ appearance in the Jurassic Park franchise would not be a one time event. 14 year after the conclusion of the original trilogy, the franchise rebooted with Jurassic World (2015). Once again an Oris was seen gracing the wrist of a prominent character in the film. Veteran actor Vincent D'Onofrio portrays the main protagonist in the film, Vic Hoskins. D’Onofrio’s character serves as the leader of InGen's security force for Jurassic World. In the film, he attempts to take advantage of the dinosaurs and use them as weapons of war (yes, this is actually the plot for those who somehow haven’t seen Jurassic World yet). D’Onofrio is seen wearing an Oris Artix GT Chronograph throughout the film. The Artix GT Chronograph is offered in 44mm. There is both a more standard 3 subdial chronograph variation and two subdial version that displays the seconds through a bar system at 9 o’clock. D’Onofrio is wearing the two subdial variation. His exact model retails for $3,300 on the Oris website.

Jurassic World features not 1 but 2 Oris watches. Actor Omar Sy in a smaller role, portrays Barry a fellow velociraptor trainer along with Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady. Sy is also wearing an Oris chronograph, this time a TT1 chronograph. The TT1 chronograph is discontinued but retailed for $3,100 USD. You can learn more about the Oris TT1 Chronograph at the Oris Website.

Logan Marshall-Green Wears An Oris Williams F1 Team Skeleton Engine Date In Prometheus

While I am an Alien fan, I probably enjoyed the prequel film Prometheus (2012) more than most. While the movie received criticism for shifting focus away from the xenomorphs, the main antagonists of Alien, and onto the Engineers, the film was more cerebral, asking questions like “where do we come from?” There are multiple watches featured in the film, including a Speedmaster worn by one of the crew-members (surprise, surprise, it is a space film). Logan Marshall-Green, who plays archaeologist Dr. Charlie Holloway, is seen in the film wearing an Oris Williams F1 Team Skeleton Engine Date. The watch is extremely interesting due to its completely exposed dial, including the full date-wheel. The watch has been discontinued, but you can find out more about it at Oris’s website.

Aaron Eckhart Wears An Oris TT1 Diver Date In No Reservations

Who said we couldn’t watch spot romcoms? I heard that Aaron Eckhart may have been wearing an Oris in the 2007 romantic comedy No Reservations (also starring Catherine Zeta-Jones). So what did I do? I went through the whole moving looking for evidence of this elusive Oris. Admittedly, I still cannot tell you what the plot is of the movie, besides the fact that Eckhart and Zeta-Jones both play chefs who do not get along at first but eventually fall in love. I was able to find some decent screenshots of Eckhart wearing a watch and I am confident enough to identify it as an Oris TT Diver Date. This piece has a very early-2000’s vibe and has been discontinued by Oris.

Cillian Murphy Wearing An Oris BC3 Chronograph In Sunshine

Imagine this. The year is 2057 and the Sun is for some reason dying. You are an astronaut sent on a mission to reignite the Sun. Well, this is the ridiculous premise of Danny Boyle’s Sunshine (2007). Somehow, it works and Sunshine is a fun scif-fi psychological thriller. We don’t get a lot of great looks at Cillian Murphy’s watch during the film, but I thought it might be an Oris BC3 Chronograph on rubber strap. I did some additional digging and was able to find another picture of Murphy wearing what is clearly a BC3 Chronograph with the same configuration as the potential Oris seen in Sunshine. This confirmed that not only was Murphy wearing an Oris, but it was part of his own collection, and not something accessorized for him by the film’s prop department.

Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) Wears An Oris ProDiver Date 1000m In Fast & Furious 6

I previously identified the watches of the entire Fast & Furious franchise, but it seems that I missed one piece. Dwayne Johnson portrays Luke Hobbs in 5 of the Fast and Furious films (including the spin-off film Hobbs & Shaw). While the Rock wears Panerais in both Fast Five and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, he actually wears an Oris in Fast & Furious 6 (2013). The Rock is seen wearing a discontinued Oris ProDiver Date 1000m. You can learn more about it at Oris’s website.

Michael B. Jordan Wears Two Oris Watches in A Journal For Jordan

2021 saw the release of A Journal For Jordan, a Denzel Washington directed biopic starring Michael B. Jordan (it is just a coincidence that Jordan is in the title of the film). Based on a true story, the movie follows 1st Sergeant Charles Monroe King who, while deployed in Iraq keeps a journal of love and advice for his baby son Jordan. Michael B. Jordan is actually seen wearing two different Oris timepieces in the film. The first piece he is wearing is the Big Crown Roberto Clemente Limited Edition. The watch is limited to 3,000 pieces (the number of hits Clemente had in his career) and the date at 21 is gold (Clemente’s jersey number). The watch retails for $1,950 USD. You can learn more about the Oris Roberto Clemente at their website .

Apparently Michael B. Jordan likes his limited edition Oris’. He wore another limited edition piece in A Journal For Jordan. This time it was the Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition named after legendary U.S. Navy Sailor Carl Brashear who achieved the position Master Diver after having his left leg amputated. This piece might be my favorite Oris of all time. The bronze case and blue dial just work well together. On top of that, I love the vintage feel that the domed crystal provides. This model was limited to just 2,000 pieces, but can be found for sale on the secondary market.

Pierce Brosnan Wears An Oris Artelier Thelonious Monk Limited Edition Watch

James Bond doesn’t wear an Oris (at least not yet), but Oris might have the next best thing. Former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan was spotted wearing the Oris Artelier Thelonious Monk in the 2017 film The Foreigner. The movie follows a British-Nung Chinese man (played by Jackie Chan) who seeks retribution for the death of his daughter. Brosnan also has a starring role as a politician, the Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland. Like the Carl Brashear and Roberto Clemente, the Oris Artelier Thelonious Monk was named after another American legend, this time in the field Jazz. Thelonious Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer. Monk is one of five jazz musicians to have been featured on the cover of Time magazine and is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington. This piece was limited to just 1,000 pieces and retailed for $1,900 USD.

Oris Watches Featured In The HBO Hit The Sopranos

I already featured the watches of fictional organized crime (including Tony Soprano’s Rolex Day-Date), but did not spot all the watches featured in HBO’s hit mafia show. The only time an Oris was featured on the wrist of a character was in Season 6 Episode 10: Moe n’ Joe. Vito Spatafore (portrayed by Joseph R. Gannascoli) can be seen wearing a stainless steel Oris XXL Worldtimer. There doesn’t seem to be a ton of information on the watch, besides the fact that it runs on an ETA 2836-2 movement and was first produced in 1997. From my research, there doesn’t appear to be many (if any examples) for sale on the secondary market.

However, Oris watches were featured in another episode of The Sopranos (they just did not happen to grace the wrist of a character). In Season 6, Episode 7: Luxury Lounge, Christopher Moltisanti (portrayed by Michael Imperioli) accompanies Sir Ben Kingsley (playing himself) to a luxury give-away where luxury products (including watches) are given to celebrities. Kingsley stops at the Oris table and is given two Oris chronographs for himself and for his step-son. Christopher ended up becoming very jealous and attempted to get his own invitation to the give-away. Looking through the screenshots from the episode in question you can see a large Oris sign as well as multiple Oris watches at an Oris table. That’s some pretty great product placement if you ask me.

Update: July 19, 2022

Chris Pratt Wears an Oris Aquis Pro Date Calibre 400 in The Terminal List

Oris watches just keep popping up on our television screens. The latest is the multitude of Oris pieces that appear in the Amazon Prime hit show The Terminal List. The series follows Lieutenant Commander James Reece, played by Christ Pratt, after his Navy SEALs Platoon is ambushed while on a mission. I spotted at least 5 different Oris watches among the cast with the most notable being the Oris on Pratt’s wrist. While Pratt wears multiple watches throughout the first season, he can be seen at points wearing the Oris Aquis Pro Date Calibre 400. This piece has a slick black case and black rubber strap and really fits the part of a watch a Navy SEAL would wear. These pieces retail for $4,600 USD. You can learn more about it at Oris’ website.

As stated, other characters in The Terminal List are seen wearing Oris timepieces. Taylor Kitsch, who rose to fame playing Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights, and Warren Cole are both seen wearing Oris Pro Pilot models.
