The Watches of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World - From Rolex to IWC and Oris
With the recent release of Jurassic World: Dominion, the nearly 30 year Jurassic Park franchise concludes (though I am not sure I believe that Dominion is truly the last Jurassic Park/World film). However, with the film being the last film in the foreseeable future (and the last film in the Jurassic World trilogy), I thought it would be a good time to take a look at the watches featured in all of the films.
Alan Grant (Sam Neill) Wears a Vintage Waltham Military Watch in Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park (1993) is the original film in the franchise and remains the best film (by far in my opinion). The special effects and animatronics in bringing Michael Crichton’s novel to the silver screen were revolutionary for the time. Beyond that, the film was genuinely terrifying and awe-inspiring.
Since the Jurassic Park was released in 1993, cell phones were still not ubiquitous. Because of that, many of the characters wore watches. Dr. Alan Grant, portrayed by Sam Neill, is a paleontologist invited by the extremely wealthy John Hammond to tour Jurassic Park before the grand opening to the public. In the film he can be seen wearing a vintage military/field watch. Many brands including Oris and Hamilton made similar watches during the 1940s and 1950s. However, I am pretty sure Grant is wearing a vintage Waltham Military watch. This is because of how closely the 5 and 7 indices are set to the seconds subdial. Additionally, the sharp angle of the lugs only fits with the model made by Waltham.
Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) Wears a Timex Expedition Watch in Jurassic Park
Dr. Ellie Sattler, portrayed by Laura Dern, is a paleobotanist and friend (and former love interest) of Alan Grant. Ellie (along with Alan) agreed to visit Jurassic Park in return for Hammond agreeing to fund their dig site for the next three years. Sattler too wears a watch in the movie. She can be seen wearing a simple but trusty Timex Expedition. While the version she wore is an older version, modern Timex Expeditions are extremely affordable, priced between $30 and $50 USD.
Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) Wears a Vintage Hanhart Watch in Jurassic Park
Ian Malcolm, portrayed by Jeff Goldblum, is the snarky mathematician in the Jurassic Park series. “Life finds a way” he quips when prognosticating that the all female dinosaurs in Jurassic Park will find a way to breed. Malcolm wears a chronograph watch in the original Jurassic Park film. Others have asserted that Malcolm is wearing a vintage Heuer Carrera Chronograph. While, the watch he’s wearing shares many similarities with the the Heuer, I think he is wearing a lesser known brand: a vintage Hanhart. When you look at the logo on Malcolm’s watch you can tell it is a single world and does not include the classic Heuer triangle or model name. Hanhart, is actually still around, and sells a similar looking Pioneer TwinDicator for €2,840 (around $3,010 USD).
John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) Wears an IWC Da Vinci Chronograph Moonphase
When creating Jurassic Park, InGen owner John Hammond, portrayed by Richard Attenborough, spared no expense. It also seems like he had good taste in watches as well. Hammond can be seen throughout Jurassic Park wearing what appears to be a gold IWC Da Vinci Chronograph with moonphase. This identification was made because of the apparent moonphase at 12, and the two tiered bezel case. These pieces range for between $5,000 USD and $10,000 USD on the secondary market.
Alan Grant Wears an Oris Big Crown 3 (BC3) Day-Date In Jurassic Park III
Alan Grant returns to the Jurassic Park franchise in the third installment, Jurassic Park III (2001). Grant is wearing a watch throughout the the movie and we manage to get a couple of close-ups that helped me make the spot. Grant is wearing an Oris Big Crown 3 (BC3) Day-Date Ref. 7500 throughout the film. You can tell this because of the case shape and lugs, the placement of the day and date, and the curved “Automatic” and “25 Jewels” near 10 and 2 o’clock. This Oris has been discontinued but they are readily available on the secondary market. You can also check out our article on the the movies and tv shows that Oris watches have been featured in (there are quite a few!).
Vic Hoskins (Vincent D’Onofrio) Wears an Oris Artix GT Chronograph in Jurassic World
Oris’ appearance in the Jurassic Park franchise would not be a one time event. 14 year after the conclusion of the original trilogy, the franchise rebooted with Jurassic World (2015). Once again an Oris was seen gracing the wrist of a prominent character in the film. Vincent D’Onofrio plays the main antagonist in the film, Vic Hoskins. Hoskins serves as the leader of InGen's security force for Jurassic World. In the film, he seeks to exploit the dinosaurs and use them as weapons of war. Hoskins is seen wearing an Oris Artix GT Chronograph in the film. The Artix GT Chronograph is offered in 44mm. There is both a more standard 3 subdial chronograph variation and two subdial version that displays the seconds through a bar system at 9 o’clock. Hoskins is wearing the two subdial variation. The exact model retails for $3,300 on the Oris website.
Barry (Omar Sy) Wears an Oris T1 chronograph in Jurassic World
Jurassic World features another Oris (that makes 3 in the franchise overall). Actor Omar Sy in a smaller role, portrays Barry, a raptor trainer who works with Owen Grady. Barry is seen wearing an Oris chronograph, a TT1 chronograph to be exact. The TT1 chronograph has been discontinued but retailed for $3,100 USD. You can learn more about the watch at the Oris Website.
Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) Wears a Casio G-Shock GD100-1B in Jurassic World
When the first Jurassic Park movie was released in 1993, Chris Pratt was just 14 years old. However, by the time the Jurassic World trilogy began, he was a movie star. Pratt portrays the main protagonist Owen Grady in the Jurassic World trilogy. Grady is raptor trainer at Jurassic World, who naturally empathizes with the dinosaurs in the park. As a grounded and non-flashy guy, Grady wears a non-flashy watch. He can be seen wearing a simple Casio G-Shock GD100-1B. This piece is very affordable and can be purchased on Amazon for just $77 USD.
Ian Malcolm Wears a Custom Rolex Milgauss in Jurassic World: Dominion
Probably the most interesting watch worn during the Jurassic Park/World series is the watch worn by Ian Malcolm in the series finale Jurassic World: Dominion (2022). By this point in the franchise, dinosaurs have made it to the U.S. mainland and Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, and Ian Malcolm reunite to save the day. Malcolm wears a very special Rolex in this film. He wears a custom DLC Rolex Milgauss with green crystal and alternating colored indices in white and orange that lume in in alternating colors of blue and green. Any watch collector will recognize the name of the customizer, MAD Paris (they are one of the most well known watch customizers in the industry). MAD Paris did not neglect any details, even including an engraving of a T-Rex on the caseback.

Alan Grant Wears a Bremont MBII Watch in Jurassic World: Dominion
Before publishing this article, I spent a good amount of time trying to figure out the watch Alan Grant wore in Jurassic World: Dominion. I thought maybe it was a Hamilton or some other field watch, but was never certain (so I excluded the watch from the article). Luckily, RedBar founder Adam Craniotes, @craniotes on Instagram, was quick to point out to me that Grant was wearing a Bremont MBII with white dial in the film. This piece was initially released in 2016 and retails for $4,995 USD. One has to wonder whether this watch is from Neill’s personal collection. Though Alan Grant is American in the Jurassic films, Neill was born in Northern Ireland (and grew up in New Zealand). It makes sense that he would wear a watch brand that hails from London.
