The Juice:

Some would argue that the Santos Dumont was one of the first purpose driven flight watches. There’s been many evolutions of the watch over the course of the years, but this release feels firmly rooted in the brand’s flight watch history. For starters, the microrotor features a motif of the Demoiselle - A plane designed my Dumont himself. The skeletonized movement features 212 parts held together by bridges that also act as the watches indices. This prevents a lot of obstruction, and puts the movement on full display. In fact, it took the brand 2-years to develop the 9629 MC and they want to you be able to gaze at damn near all of it.

The watch comes in 3 flavors, a steel, a yellow gold with navy lacquer, and a rose gold model. The clear frontrunner as far as fan favorites go is the yellow gold and navy lacquered model. Unfortunately, it’s limited to 150 pieces. Cartier has been doing lacquer work on their watches since as long as the brand has been around. And there’s just something clean and unique about the piece that helps it to stand out and the level of precise decoration to lacquer at this level is quite the feat.

Overall, this is an incredibly cool release from Cartier. The all new Calbre is gorgeous, and utilizing it in the Santos Dumont case is simply a classy move. The watches are large enough to showcase the craftmanship required for such a stunning piece, but not too big that it can’t slide under a cuff. We love it.
