Watch Spotting the 95th Oscars in 2023
It’s that time again. The Oscars are well under way and the watches have been coming in fast and furious. The red carpet has always been a forum in which luxury watch markets get some spotlight with black tie attention. This year, two brands really dominated the 95th Annual Academy Awards. Those two brands were Omega and Cartier. While they’ve often been fairly popular at the event, this year felt especially heavy with both brands being on some of the more prominent wrists of the evening. So what did everyone where? Let’s get into it.
Brendan Fraser wore an Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope Co-Axial Master Chronometer Chronograph to the 95th Oscars
Oscar Winner Brendan Fraser showed up to the red carpet with quite an under-the-radar Speedmaster that’s both modern and lovely. The Chronoscope was released a couple of years ago, but is really a showstopper when it comes to modern Speedmasters that aren’t specifically the moonwatch. The Whale actor was up for best actor in a motion picture and pairs the watch with a lovely blue leather strap in-leu of the standard stainless steel bracelet typical to the model.
Jay Ellis wore a Cartier Tank Must with Diamond Bezel to the 95th Oscars
Jay Ellis has always been strong on the red carpet look, but pairing his embossed black tux with a more sized-down dress look was the right choice. The Cartier Tank is already a strong option in the Dress watch game, but Jay added a Diamond bezel to put the cherry on top. We love it.
Hong Chau wore a Panerai Luminor Due Luna PAM01180 on Pink Satin Strap to the 95th Oscars
Hong Chau dazzled in a pink dress she famously only saw in sketches. Naturally, with the soft pink dress, a soft pink strap simply works and matches well. The Whale Best Supporting Actress nominee decided on a Panerai Luminor Due ‘Luna’. A classy watch with a Moonphase complication to dress it up.
Michelle Yeoh Wore a custom Sapphire Richard Mille RM 07-02 to the 95th Oscars
Michelle Yeoh (who’s just won Best Actress) is a brand ambassador for Richard Mille, so it’s no surprise to see that she chose the more dressy option from the brand with a custom version of the RM 07-02. The diamond studded dial comes in a clear sapphire case. The watch isn’t currently part of the Richard Mille catalog, but we fully expect it to be announced as a new model in the near future (unless it’s simply a 1 of 1 from the brand) For a sport centric case style, it’s certainly a classy option.
Ryan Seacrest wore a gold Rolex Daytona Ref. 116508 to the 95th Oscars
Ryan Seacrest is a known lover of Rolex, having been spotted with a number of them over the years. For the 95th Oscar’s, arguably the most famous radio and TV voice was spotted rocking the sold gold Rolex Daytona (Ref. 116508). It’s flashy, but works well for such a high profile individual.
Marc Consuelos wore a vintage Rolex Daytona Ref 6263 with silver dial to the 95th Oscars
Marc Consuelos showed up with his Wife Kelly Ripa with a vintage Rolex Daytona (Ref. 6263). The was was produced in the early 70’s, with a run into the 80’s. It’s not necessarily a rare watch, more than it’s an if-you-know-you-know Daytona that makes it’s way around high-end vintage Rolex collectors circles on the regular. Maybe Marc is a real watch guy.
Barry Keoghan wore an Omega Seamaster Globemaster to the 95th Oscars
Nominated for his role in the Banshees of Inisherin, Barry Keoghan kept it simple and sporty in a lilac suit. It suits him, and when paired with a simple steel sport watch, the entire look feels tied together. The clean style of the Omega Seamaster Globemaster slides nicely under a suit cuff and works well here.
Lenny Kravitz wore a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Duoface Small Seconds to the 95th Oscars
Lenny Kravitz is the undeniable king of rock-n-roll style. He’s ultra-luxury but still ultimately casual look on the red carpet was grounded by a simple Jaeger Le-Lecoultre Reverso Duo-Face. Known for its ability to flip around and integrate on the case, the Duo-Face features two dials - one on each side.
Ke Huy Quan wore an Omega globemaster to the 95th Oscars
Another Globemaster has been spotted on the scene. Key Huy Quan just won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. During his tearful and touching speech, the actor flashing an Omega Globemaster on his wrist.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson wore a Tag Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Date to the 95th Oscars
In a categorically uncharacteristic attire choice, The Rock was spotted at the 95th Oscars in a much more modestly sized and priced wristwatch. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson opted for a 40mm Tag Heuer Aquaracer. It’s a simple steel sport diver that works with the entire outfit, but it’s definitely not something on our bingo board of “Watches we would see The Rock wearing”. Still, it’s fun.
Questlove wore an IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Boutique Edition to the 95th Oscars
Questlove can certainly be a controversial figure, and at these Oscars he certainly didn’t Disappoint. While much of his wrist game was hidden by a sleeve, he peaked a quick shot of the IWC Perpetual Calendar in Gold. It’s a lot to love, and is one of the brands more complicated watches without a Tourbillon. We love it, and find it to fit Questlove well.
Michael B. Jordan wore a Cartier Tank Must to the 95th Oscars
The Creed III nominee rocked another categorically different watch for the occasion. The Cartier Tank Must is one of the smaller watches in the Cartier dress watch collections, but Michael B. Jordan rocks it well. It’s a clean look that’s both vintage and modern at the same time. That’s fitting for an Actor starring in a movie that (kinda) reboots a classic series.
John Cho wore an IWC Portofino Automatic IW536501 to the 95th Oscars
John Cho, as is often the case with the actor, keeps it simple with an understated IWC Portofino. The 3-hand watch is one of the more affordable and simple offerings in the brands collection, which makes it one of the better dress watch options from the brand.
Harry Shum Jr. wore an Omega De Ville Prestige to the 95th Oscars
Harry Shum Jr. showed up wearing a quintessential Omega dress watch with the De Ville Presage. It’s a simple watch with a slick black dial on a black leather strap. When it comes to a black tie event, you’d be hard pressed to find a better option.
Idris Elba wore a Gucci G-Timeless Planetarium to the 95th Oscars
In what seems like the most “out of left field” options of the evening, Idris Elba showed up in a Gucci watch. But not any Gucci watch, the GPHG nominated Timeless Planetarium. This Tourbillon model has 12 green gemstones as the indices. It’s a serious entry into high horology from the Gucci fashion house. And we simply love the bold design.
Andrew Garfield wore an Omega Tresor Co-Axial Master Chronometer to the 95th Oscars
Andrew is a longtime Omega wearer on the red carpet. I think the last 3 times we’ve watch spotted the events, we’ve seen Andrew in various Omegas. This time, he wears another simple dress watch from the brand with the De Ville Tresor.
Paul Mescal wore a Cartier Tank Chinoise to the 95th Oscars
Paul Meacal brought along quite a luxury piece for his first round at the Oscars. The Tank Chinoise is a popular dress watch in an unconventional shape. However the model is often associated with the rose gold models that have gotten really popular on social media, Paul has opted for the lesser-known Platinum model - a classy entry to the brands catalog.
